Once both machines are online, much of a migration can run remotely, and we set up computers by remote for clients nationwide. We work out of Prescott, Arizona, so the full buy-through-us pipeline with delivery is an in-person Quad Cities service; we hand the machine over finished.

The two honest reasons people finally replace
The first is the slowdown. Most replacements we do start the same way: a machine that has been quietly losing speed for years, until one day its owner stops negotiating with it. That slow decline is the most common purchase trigger we see, and it carries a hidden advantage, because the old computer is still alive to hand over its contents.
The second is our own rule. We proactively recommend replacing a computer once it passes 5 years old, or whenever a repair would cost more than roughly 30% of a comparable new machine. That isn't a sales tactic, it's the honest math, and it's why replacing on your schedule beats replacing during an emergency. The migrations that scare people
Every migration has one thing the client is quietly afraid of, and it's rarely the photos. Usually it's the Outlook profile with 20 years of mail in it, configured by someone long gone. Or the browser that was never signed in to anything, so every bookmark and saved password lives only on the old machine, worst when that machine has already died. Sometimes it's a genealogy program no store has stocked in a decade, or the password hunt: getting logged back into all of it.
We've written step-by-step procedures for each of these, because in this line of work they're the usual suspects. Bookmarks and saved passwords can often be lifted straight off an old drive even when the computer around it is dead. And the easiest migration we ever do is the one where a backup already exists. If this move rattled you, day one of the new machine is the right day to set up a real backup.
Wiped before it leaves, recycled after
The old machine comes back to our office. It doesn't sit in your closet radiating guilt, and it doesn't reach a donation bin with your tax returns still on it. If it still runs, it gets a full secure wipe using the erase tools built into Windows and macOS, which exist for exactly this moment. If it's dead, we don't gamble on a wipe we can't verify: we physically destroy the storage drive. Either way, the remains go to a local independent recycler who picks up from us.
Two ways to get a new machine finished
Buy the computer through us and nothing about this changes on November 1, 2026. It's still a flat $400: pre-set-up at our office, delivered, transferred and taught at your desk in one service call.
If you've already bought the machine, the Tek Shop adds a second route. From November 1, 2026 you can bring both computers in, the new one and the old one, and a full setup with your data migrated across is Tek Core, $240 flat, rather than the hourly rate. The old machine has to come too, because the files, the browser passwords and the mail profile all still live on it. With no parts to order, that's a 1 to 2 day turnaround.
What keeps most people choosing the in-home version is the last hour. Getting a new computer talking to your printer, your network and your phone happens where those things are, and the questions that matter tend to arrive once you're sitting in your own chair.
The same flat fee across the Quad Cities
Delivery and the no-trip-fee rule cover all four towns. A Dewey-Humboldt address pays the same flat $400 as one three blocks from the courthouse plaza. The nearest Apple Store is a half-day round trip to the Phoenix area, which is why new Macs here get unboxed and set up at the kitchen table instead. And if you bought the machine yourself and we're billing hourly, the same fairness applies from Prescott to Chino Valley: no trip fee, no diagnostic fee, wherever we drive.
One more local reality: every monsoon season, power surges kill a few older machines around here. When we replace one, the new computer gets a UPS on day one, so the next storm is a blink of the lights and nothing more.

How much does new computer setup cost?
If you buy the computer through us, setup is a flat $400 in labor covering the whole job end to end, and OneStop members take 10–20% off. If you already have the machine, it's our standard $160/hr with no trip fee and no diagnostic fee. Full rates live on our pricing page.
How long does it take?
The slow part happens at our office before delivery, so the in-home visit goes to your data and your training. Most on-site visits run 1 to 2 hours; a very large photo library can stretch the transfer, and we plan around it.
Can you do this remotely?
A good share of it, yes. We support clients nationwide by remote and phone, and once both machines are online the transfer itself can often run remotely. The full buy-through-us pipeline with delivery is an in-person Quad Cities service. Out-of-state family can also arrange the whole thing by phone for a parent here.
Do you set up new Macs?
Yes. New-Mac setup, data transfer and Time Machine backups are all part of the job, done at your kitchen table rather than a Phoenix-area Apple Store half a day away. We also help set up iPhones and iPads, though we don't repair their hardware.
My old computer is dead. Can you still get my files?
Usually. Drives from dead computers very often still read, and pulling files off them is exactly the kind of basic data recovery we do.
Will my email come over? Outlook has years of mail in it.
Yes. Tricky Outlook configurations are one of the specific complications we've built written procedures for; old account types and decades-deep mail archives are exactly why those procedures exist. Getting mail flowing on the new machine is part of the standard job.
I don't remember most of my passwords. Is that a problem?
It's the most normal problem in this entire job. Every migration includes the password hunt: getting you logged back into email, banking and everything else, and we'll leave you with a better system than the sticky note. Our guide to password managers is the homework version.
What happens to my old computer?
It comes back to our office for a secure wipe (or, if it's dead, physical destruction of the storage drive) and then goes to a local independent recycler. Your tax returns never leave with the hardware.
Could my current computer just be upgraded instead?
Sometimes, and we'll say so. A machine under about 5 years old with a slow drive is often a great candidate for an SSD upgrade at a fraction of replacement cost. Past 5 years, or once a repair would run past roughly 30% of a replacement, we recommend replacing.
What if one of my programs won't work on the new computer?
We flag it before the move, not after. A few older programs need a newer version or a modern replacement, and we'll tell you which, and what it costs, up front. The standing TekStop rule applies on hourly jobs: if something genuinely can't be made to work, you pay for the time, and we never keep running the clock without telling you first.
Is training included, or is that extra?
Included. Education is the last step of every setup, and we don't leave until you've driven the new machine and your questions are answered. If you want to go deeper later, tech training is its own visit, and it works best when you bring a written list of questions.
