Is your computer slow and unresponsive? A computer tune up may be the answer! Here are three steps you can take to get your computer running fast again.
1. Restart Your Computer
I know it may seem too easy, but sometimes a little patience and a computer restart can make a big difference. You may already shutdown your computer every night or you may leave it running 24/7. (There’s nothing wrong with that, by the way.)
But, a restart may still help. This is an especially important step with Windows computers. Navigate to your power menu and select “restart”. This is very different than the “shutdown” command and can solve a lot of simple computer problems. After the computer starts up again, give it some time to process tasks that could be running in the background. It may take up to half an hour to complete updates and other important processes. You might be surprised at the improved speed of your computer!
2. Tune Up Your Computer with System Updates
I know what you’re probably thinking, “That’s what everyone says!” And it’s true. Common advice for computer problems is to update the system software. But this is another simple, yet important part of keeping your computer running its best.
It can be tempting to postpone updates when you get that little notice in the corner. But be sure to perform your computer updates when you’re done using it for the day. Very often, we find that slow computer performance comes from pending updates running behind the scenes. Allowing the updates to complete is a critical step for tuning up your computer.
3. Scan For and Remove Malware
Malware, like viruses and PUPs (potentially unwanted programs), can drastically reduce the speed of your computer. Perform a manually virus scan using your computer’s anti-malware software. If any threats are found, follow the software’s instructions for removing them.
Avoid Third-Party Tune Up Apps
You have probably seen advertisements for apps claiming to speed up your computer. But be careful! Many of these applications do the opposite of what they claim. They may be poorly programmed and often contain malware. We recommend avoiding these applications, since your computer has tools built in to perform most of the functions provided. Even reputable tune up utilities like CCleaner are no longer necessary on modern computers.
Advanced Computer Tune Up Steps
The three steps above are just the beginning. Depending on your circumstance, more advanced methods of tuning up your computer may be needed. For instance, an upgrade to an SSD or a RAM upgrade may help breathe new life into your system. If your computer is over 5 years old and running poorly, it may be time to purchase a new computer.
